INDIA AND PLASTICS

IT’S NOT AN
IDEAL WORLD

According to the Press Information Bureau (2016) India generates 62 million tons of waste every year – out of which 5.6 million tons is plastic waste. (Government figures). In an ideal world, every material produced is either capable of being fully consumed, or used multiple times for different applications, without there being any non-biodegradable residue. This is circular economy. But we don’t live in an ideal world. The irresponsible disposal and inefficient waste management systems have destroyed the value of plastics in the industry.Circular economy is the way forward for prosperity as it is important that growth is accompanied by resource efficiency. In essence, we must work towards recycling and elimination of waste to reduce pressure on environment and stimulate innovation.
