Plastic waste can now be upcycled to adhesives

A team at UC Berkeley has developed a process that turns plastic waste into something more valuable – an adhesive. Based on an engineered catalyst, the inspiration was to find ways to “upcycle” plastics by putting them to new uses while preserving the properties that made them attractive in the first place.

These solar-powered barges can scoop up 50 tons of plastic from rivers each day

Fortunately for humanity, The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit taking on plastic waste in the oceans today, also has a novel solution for stopping plastic from entering it via rivers. The solution comes in the form of a solar-powered barge named the “Interceptor”. The 24-meter-long (78 feet) vessel resembles a large houseboat and uses a curved barrier to catch waste floating downstream.

Transforming waste to wealth: DM sets up plastic-shredding unit in insurgency-hit Changlang district

In 2019, an AIIMS doctor turned district magistrate- Devansh Yadav set up a plastic-shredding unit at Kumung Pathar panchayat, largely dominated by adivasis (tea tribe). The unit shreds single-use plastic for road-laying work. Roads constructed from the mixture of bitumen and the plastic can prevent water seepage and ensure better durability.

Divers pick up 600kg of trash in underwater clean-up drive in Vizag

When the Port City was celebrating Christmas, a group of dozen scuba divers were busy taking out trash from under the sea at Rushikonda during a beach clean-up drive. The divers were also accomapanied by local visitors. Together, they collected around 600 kilograms of plastic discarded masks and other waste from under the sea and sea and on the beach.
